Pump The Bubbles

Pump The Bubbles pairs tall, glowing columns of water with sturdy hand pumps that visitors operate themselves. Each stroke of the pump pushes air into the base of the column, and a swarm of silvery bubbles goes racing toward the surface — twisting, merging and shimmering in the light. The connection is beautifully direct: your effort, your bubbles.

Visitor experience

Side-by-side columns turn the exhibit into a friendly competition, as children pump furiously to see whose bubble storm climbs fastest and fullest. Younger visitors are equally happy at a slower pace, sending up single streams and watching each bubble wobble its way to the top. The pumping action is physical and satisfying, and the glowing, fizzing columns are hypnotic to watch even from across the gallery.

The science on show

The exhibit is buoyancy and air pressure in action: air forced down the line expands and rises through the denser water, while bubble size, speed and wobble reveal the physics of drag and buoyant force. It is cause and effect a two-year-old can grasp — and a physics lesson hiding in plain sight.
