Raining Clouds

Raining Clouds lets visitors summon a rain shower with nothing more than their presence. As a child approaches, the exhibit senses them and sends droplets cascading down from the cloud above, turning a walk-up into an instant weather event. Three separate stations each deliver a different intensity, from the softest, ticklish drizzle to a dramatic, drumming downpour, so visitors can choose their own forecast and compare the moods of the rain.

Playful, sensory and impossible to resist, Raining Clouds captures the simple wonder of a rain shower and puts it entirely at children's fingertips — or rather, at their footsteps.

Visitor experience

The magic begins the instant a visitor steps up and the rain answers their arrival, and children delight in discovering that they are the ones triggering the shower. Moving between the three stations becomes a little adventure, as they seek out the gentle drizzle, brace themselves for the heavy downpour and compare how each one feels and sounds.

There is endless fun in stepping in and out to start and stop the rain, and in daring friends to stand under the strongest cloud. The soothing sight and sound of falling water make the exhibit calming and joyful at once, and its approach-activated simplicity means even the youngest visitors can play confidently, all on their own.

How it works

1. Approach detection. Each station senses when a visitor steps up and activates the rain in response.
2. Cascading droplets. Water falls from the cloud above, creating a curtain of rain to stand beneath.
3. Three intensities. The three stations range from a gentle drizzle to a powerful downpour.
4. Start and stop by moving. Stepping in and out triggers and halts each shower, putting visitors in control.
