Keeping museum water exhibits clean: a maintenance primer

The most common hesitation we hear about water exhibits is operational: "Won't it be a headache to keep clean?" It is a fair question — and with the right engineering and a simple routine, the honest answer is no. Here is what running a water exhibit actually involves.

The system does most of the work

Every exhibit we build runs on a closed recirculation loop: water cycles continuously through mechanical filtration that removes debris, and treatment that keeps the water hygienic. The system runs whenever the exhibit does, which means the water your visitors touch is being cleaned all day, every day, automatically.

Daily routine: minutes, not hours

A typical opening routine is a visual check — water level, clarity, stations working — plus a wipe-down of surfaces and a skim of anything visitors left behind. Closing adds a quick tidy of loose play pieces. For most single exhibits this is a 10–15 minute job for floor staff; a full gallery scales accordingly.

Weekly and periodic care

Weekly tasks center on the filter: rinsing or swapping media and checking treatment levels, following the schedule we provide. Periodically — typically a few times a year, depending on traffic — the system is drained, cleaned and refilled. None of this requires specialist technicians; we train your team at handover and the procedures are documented.

Design choices that make cleaning easy

Maintenance is designed in, not bolted on: smooth, non-porous surfaces that wipe clean in seconds; rounded internal corners with no dirt traps; drainage flooring in splash zones; and access panels placed where technicians actually need them. Play pieces are dishwasher-simple: rinse and return.

Questions to ask any exhibit builder

Whoever you buy from, ask these: Is the water continuously filtered and treated? What is the daily routine and how long does it take? How often is a full drain-down needed? Are surfaces non-porous and accessible? Is maintenance documented and is training included? If the answers are vague, the headaches come later.
